Frequently asked questions
What is ClefSnap?
ClefSnap is a sheet music scanner app. It turns a photo or PDF of printed music into a score you can hear, edit and transpose. It can also write music from a blank page, arrange it, and show it full screen for performing.
Which music can it read?
Printed music on five-line staves: piano music, choir and songs, solo instruments, chamber music and band parts. It also reads titles, lyrics, chord symbols and tempo marks.
Can it read handwritten music or drum parts?
No. Handwritten music and percussion or drum kits are not supported.
Can it listen to a recording and write out the notes?
No. ClefSnap reads pages, not audio.
Will it read every page perfectly?
No music reader is perfect, so check a scanned score against the page. ClefSnap shows you the bars it is unsure of and asks about them one at a time, and you can correct anything in the editor. A clear, evenly lit photo helps a lot: see how to photograph sheet music.
Do my scores get uploaded?
No. Your photos, PDFs and scores are read on your phone and stay there. Anonymous usage statistics are covered in the privacy policy, and you can turn them off in Settings.
Do I need an account or an internet connection?
No. There is no account or sign-in, and scanning works offline.
Which file formats can it export?
PDF, page images (PNG), MusicXML, MIDI and WAV audio. Export is part of ClefSnap Premium.
Which phones does it run on?
ClefSnap is on Google Play for Android. Reading printed music needs a phone with at least 3 GB of memory. The app is coming to iPhone and iPad.
What does ClefSnap Premium include?
Premium adds export and sharing in every format, scans of any length, the whole score library, every harmony style and accompaniment, and stage mode with a page-turn pedal, half-page turns and setlists. It is sold as a monthly or yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase, and the app shows the price before you buy.
Which languages does the app speak?
55 languages, chosen in the app or taken from your phone.
